New exhibition of Souvenirs d’Italie [Recollections of Italy] (1600-1850) in Paris 29 September 2009 to 17 January 2010
This autumn, the Petit Palais presents, at the Musée de la Vie Romantique (Museum of Romantic Life), a selection of works from its collections, by French artists who visited Italy between the 17th and mid-19th centuries.
The exhibition displays some one hundred works (paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures), some produced sur le motif (‘in nature’) and completed in the atelier, others reconstructed upon the artists’ return to France.
For the first time since 1818, the spectacular mythological setting of eight monumental paintings by Hubert Robert, from the Hôtel Beaumarchais, will be reconstructed for public display. Six of these paintings today decorate the rooms of City Hall. They will be loaned specially for the occasion, for display alongside those from the Petit Palais.
The museum also offers cultural activities, guided tours of the exhibition and guided tours of its permanent collections.
